Since graduating from Design School Kolding in 1997, Alken has dedicated more than 20 years to shaping Danish design through his Copenhagen-based design studio, Format Design. His work is defined by clean lines, lightweight construction, and a focus on ergonomic comfort, ensuring that each piece is both aesthetically timeless and practical for daily use.
In 2014, Alken began his collaboration with FDB Møbler, leading efforts to revive and modernize classic designs while also introducing new collections that reflect contemporary needs. His work embraces the human aspect of design, prioritizing how furniture interacts with the body and movement to create pieces that feel as good as they look.
Among Alken’s most celebrated contributions is the Sammen outdoor furniture series, which embodies the Danish love of outdoor living. Designed with simple, elegant lines and natural oiled teak, the collection encourages gatherings, reflecting the warmth and togetherness at the heart of Danish culture. The name “Sammen,” meaning “together,” perfectly captures the spirit of the series.
